چکیده

In this work the mode I fracture properties of bone tissue were determined for the RL propagation system. With this aim, Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) fracture tests were performed using specimens of cortical bone tissue harvested from bovine femurs with an age of approximately 8 months. In order to overcome the difficulty associated to the monitoring of crack length during propagation in the course of the test, the CBBM (Compliance Based Beam Method) was used. This method is based on beam theory and experimental specimen compliance, thus allowing the attainment of an equivalent crack length during the test. The results obtained reveal the existence of a plateau on the Resistance-curve, thus making possible to estimate with accuracy the critical strain energy release rate. © 2014 Portuguese Society of Materials (SPM). Effect of Rock Fracture Filling on Mode I and II Fracture Toughness

This paper focuses on some fracture toughness tests performed on the pre-cracked Brazilian specimens of rock-like materials. Also the effect of rock fracture filling on the fracture toughness was considered experimentally.  Fracture toughness is a key parameter for studying the crack propagation and fragmentation processes in rock structures. Fracture mechanics is an applicable tool to improve ...

The significance of crack-resistance curves to the mixed-mode fracture toughness of human cortical bone.

The majority of fracture mechanics studies on the toughness of bone have been performed under tensile loading. However, it has recently been shown that the toughness of human cortical bone in the transverse (breaking) orientation is actually much lower in shear (mode II) than in tension (mode I); a fact that is physiologically relevant as in vivo bone is invariably loaded multiaxially. Since bo...

The double cantilever beam test applied to mode I fracture characterization of cortical bone tissue.

The primary objective of this work was to analyse the adequacy of the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) test in determining fracture toughness under pure mode I loading of cortical bone tissue. A new data reduction scheme based on specimen compliance and the crack equivalent concept was used to overcome the difficulties inherent in crack monitoring during its growth. It provides a complete resistanc...

Mixed-mode fracture of human cortical bone.

Although the mode I (tensile opening) fracture toughness has been the focus of most fracture mechanics studies of human cortical bone, bones in vivo are invariably loaded multiaxially. Consequently, an understanding of mixed-mode fracture is necessary to determine whether a mode I fracture toughness test provides the appropriate information to accurately quantify fracture risk. In this study, w...

Crack Tip Constraint for Anisotropic Sheet Metal Plate Subjected to Mode-I Fracture

On the ground of manufacturing, sheet metal parts play a key role as they cover about half of the production processes. Sheet metals are commonly obtained from rolling and forming processes which causes misalignment of micro structure resulting obvious anisotropic characteristics and micro cracks. Presence of micro cracks poses serious attention, when stresses at the tip reach to the critical v...
